Girls Who Code

As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes how we learn, work, and communicate, ensuring girls have the skills not simply to use new technology, but to understand and help shape it, has never felt more important. Girls Who Code has been working to close the gender gap in technology since 2012, providing free educational programs that introduce students to computer science while building the confidence, community, and opportunities needed to pursue careers in the field. To date, the organization has served more than 860,000 women and girls around the world.

Girls Who Code was founded by Reshma Saujani, an attorney, author, and leading advocate for women’s economic empowerment. The idea began after Saujani visited schools and saw firsthand the striking gender disparity in computing classrooms. She went on to build Girls Who Code into an international movement, while becoming an influential voice on how girls are educated, encouraged to take risks, and given the confidence to enter traditionally male-dominated fields. Today, she is also the founder and CEO of Moms First, an organization advocating for greater support for mothers and families.

That original mission is taking on new urgency in the age of AI. Girls Who Code is expanding its focus beyond traditional coding into artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies, with an AI curriculum designed to reach more than 200,000 students in the U.S. More than 85,000 students have already accessed its AI coursework and learning opportunities. The goal is not simply technical proficiency but giving young women the knowledge and agency to participate in the conversations, decisions, and innovations that will define their futures.

Education has always been one of the most powerful ways to expand opportunity. In an AI-driven world, digital literacy is increasingly part of that equation. By giving girls early access to these skills – and encouraging them to see themselves not just as consumers of technology, but as its future creators, entrepreneurs, and leaders – Girls Who Code is helping ensure that the next generation of innovation benefits from a far broader range of voices and perspectives.
